If you were pulled over by a plainclothes police officer on a dark road, and s/he walked up to your car and ordered you to get out, what would you do? I think the first thing that I would do is ask for identification. After all, there are criminals out there who pose as officers in order to take advantage of people. So a sign of authority is needed to confirm that the person is truly a police officer.
We should look at miracles in the same way when we read about them in the New Testament. God gave power to His people to show that they had the authority to represent Him.
“And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.”
But that confirmation is no longer needed because we get the complete message from the Bible. There is no need to rely on confirmed messengers to deliver anything aside from what we read in the Bible.
1 Corinthians 13:8-10
” . . . As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.”
Miracles have ceased because messengers of God are now confirmed only if they preach and teach the truth of God’s word.
